Does Alcohol Help You Sleep? Fact or Fiction?

It’s a common belief that a drink or two before bed can help you drift off more easily, but in truth, alcohol may do more harm than good for your sleep quality.

While it can initially make you feel sleepy, alcohol disrupts your natural sleep cycle, reducing the amount of the vital restorative deep sleep stage. This often leads to a lighter, more disrupted sleep that can leave you feeling unrefreshed and lacking energy the next day.

During the night, as your body processes the alcohol, it often causes restlessness and can lead to waking up more frequently.

It may also worsen issues like snoring or sleep apnoea, further affecting your sleep quality.

So, while a nightcap may make you feel relaxed at first, over time, it can impact your ability to achieve truly restful sleep.

Consider introducing a herbal tea instead as part of your winding down routine for a better night's rest.
