Creating a bedtime routine is as essential for adults as it is for babies. Just as we soothe babies to sleep by following familiar steps, our minds and bodies also respond to a series of calming actions that signal it’s time to wind down.
A consistent routine helps to prepare the body for restful sleep, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy deeper, more restorative rest.
A good routine might include the following :
- dimming the lights about an hour before bed
- reducing blue light from screens that can hinder melatonin production
- having a warm bath or shower can help relax muscles and reduce stress
- engaging in calming activities like reading, gentle stretching, or practising mindfulness can ease any residual tension.
- a few minutes of deep breathing or gratitude journaling can clear the mind, readying it for a peaceful night’s sleep.
Much like we do for babies, establishing a soothing routine signals to our bodies that it’s time for rest, helping us transition smoothly from day to night.
